Frequently asked questions

New to the app? The Getting Started guide walks through everything step by step.

Where are my notes stored?

On your device, and in your own private iCloud Drive so they appear on your other devices too. The developer never has access to your notes. If iCloud is turned off, your notes stay on that one device. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.

My notes aren't appearing on my other device

Make sure iCloud Drive is turned on for both devices and that both use the same Apple ID (Settings β†’ your name β†’ iCloud β†’ iCloud Drive). Sync is not instant, so give it a moment, especially right after writing. Look at the cloud icon at the top left of the Notes list. If it has a line through it, iCloud is not available on that device. If a note still does not show up, open the app on both devices to prompt a refresh.

A Bible reference isn't turning blue

Nota Scriptura recognizes references written with a chapter, a colon and a verse, such as "John 3:16", "Romans 8:28-30" or "1 Cor 13:4". Check that the book name is spelled correctly (common abbreviations work) and that you used a colon. References that are only a chapter, such as "Mark 5" or "1 Cor 13", are recognized only if you turn on Settings β†’ Reference Detection β†’ Recognize chapter references. The short words "Is", "Am" and "So" need a capital letter or a period after them ("Is 6:3").

Which Bible translation does it use?

The World English Bible (WEB), a modern-English, public-domain translation. It is built into the app, so verse text appears instantly and works with no internet connection.

Is it free? Do I pay again for each device?

Nota Scriptura 1.1 is free on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It is one app in the App Store; install it on each device you use.

Do I need an account? Do I need internet?

No account. Open the app and start writing. You do not need internet to write, read verse text or search. Internet is only used by iCloud, in the background, to sync your notes between your devices.

What information do you collect?

None. The app has no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party code that collects data. Your notes live on your device and in your own iCloud. See the Privacy Policy.

How do I back up my notes, or move them to a new device?

Signed in to the same Apple ID with iCloud Drive on, a new device picks your notes up on its own. For an extra copy, go to Settings β†’ Backup and tap Create Backup; the app also makes one automatically when you open it (at least a day apart) and keeps the latest 10 in iCloud. To restore, tap Restore from Backup… and choose one. The app first saves a safety copy of your current notes. To pass a single note to someone else, use Export NotaScriptura File from the note's β€’β€’β€’ menu, and have them open it.

I deleted a note. Can I get it back?

Deleting is permanent: there is no "Recently Deleted" folder, which is why the app asks you to confirm. (On iPhone and iPad swipe a note in the list and confirm Delete; on the Mac use the right-click menu.) If you had a backup made before you deleted it, use Settings β†’ Backup β†’ Restore from Backup…. Create a backup yourself before you delete anything you might want again.

Can I see or restore an earlier version of a note?

Yes. Open the note, tap β€’β€’β€’, and choose Version History. The app lists earlier saved versions with their dates. Tap one to preview it, then Restore to bring it back.

Does it have Dark Mode?

Nota Scriptura follows your device's appearance setting, so it switches between Light and Dark along with your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Can I change the text size?

There is no text-size setting inside the app. Titles, lists and panels follow the text size you set in your device settings, and the text of a note is a standard, comfortable reading size.

How do I share a note with a friend?

From the note's β€’β€’β€’ menu choose Share as PDF, Share as RTF or Share as Plain Text for someone who does not have the app, or Export NotaScriptura File for another Nota Scriptura user. See Share a note, or bring one in in the guide.
